Deák Mansion - former home of the ‘Sage of the Country’ |

He entered the world of politics in 1833 when he attended the assembly of Pressburg, present day Bratislava, Slovakia His success with the Hungarian Assembly’s ability to create laws, Deák Ferenc was one of the most well known and respected individuals in reformed politics of the 1840’s. In 1836 he developed and distributed a formal document regarding the various cases he supported without the consent of the censorship. Bee-eaters |
The bee-eater is a bird known for it's peculiar sound, vibrant colors and the fact that it's preferred nesting place is in the steep earthen bank. It is not uncommon to have over 50 pairs of mating birds in one area and one time. They typically have 6 to 7 eggs at a time and begin the gestation period as soon as the first egg is laid - typically lasting 20-22 days. Once hatched, the fledglings will leave the nest at various times as opposed to all leaving the at the same time - usually learning to fly within 30 days. Unlike most bird types, the bee-eater chicks are fed by both the male and female and prefer a diet of flying insects. Much to the frustration to beekeepers, thebee-eater prefers honeybees as part of its diet and is a migrating bird usually staying in the area from the end of May to the middle of August. |

Ruin Church of Kustány, 13th century |
Architectural style: Gothic
Even the ruins of the church of Kustány have maintained an air of magnificence. The current settlement of Kustány used to be two distinct villages, Alsó-, or Egyházaskustány and Felsőkustány. The parish church of Egyházaskustány was built on an isle of the Zala river in the 12th century. It was first mentioned by a written source in 1256. It is said the isle was first called Isle Elek, and only later received the name Kustány. Because of the hermits residing there, it was often referred to as the Isle of the Hermits. The church partially destroyed by the Turkish invasion was restored in the 18th century. The dimensions of the remains suggest that it must have had a width of 6 meters, a length of 18 meters and a height of 7.5 meters. The Gothic building made of bricks was oriented in such a way that its longitudinal axis would be illuminated by the waking sun on the day of its patron saint. Remains to be seen: fragments of the Western façade, small fragments of the Northern and Southern walls, fragments of the Western façade, up to the height of the gable and small fragments of the adjoining Northern and Southern walls; the site of the former gate in the longitudinal axis of the Western façade, with the ruins of a tower erected over a pair of cantilevers, and remains of a series of pointed blind arches on both sides. Fragments of medieval vaulting can be observed on the Western wall.
